Google has just revamped the Google Play Store – the largest home of apps for the Android platforms. The recent update implies a visual overhaul that is not only cleaner and simpler, it is also easier to navigate.

The most prominent change that may attract your eyes is the introduction of two distinct tabs labelling “Apps” and “Games”. The “Music” tab has now been relocated and it can now be found under the “Categories” at the top.

Google is optimistic enough that the two main tabs on the main page will help them “better serve users the right kind of content”.

Users may go into further sections of the two parent tabs such as “For You” section for personalized suggestions and “Top Charts” for the most popular apps in the category. The remaining categories now been moved to a separate tab at the top.

Google has also redesigned the app details page of the Play Store as well. Once you find the app you’re searching for, the new layout will show all the app related information right at the top including ratings, reviews etc. with a much wider “Install” button.

The new update also brings Google’s new app icon design. Instead of the apps’ standard icons, they now have a uniform square-shaped icon with rounded corners for every app.

Google Play’s Boris Valusek wrote in a blog post:

“To improve the overall store experience, we’re excited to roll out a complete visual redesign. Aligning with Material design language, we’re introducing several user-facing updates to deliver a cleaner, more premium store that improves app discovery and accessibility for our diverse set of users.”

Our Say about Play Store’s New Update

Frankly speaking, the new design of the Play Store seems to be inspired by Apple’s App Store – a cleaner, whiter look to distinct navigation tabs at the bottom and a similar layout for the app details page. Although the design rework makes things simpler and cleaner but the app is still blindingly white; asking for a Dark Mode instead.
