HP is the most popular and trusted name in the field of laptops but the recent development has made HP fans a bit disappointing. Reportedly, more than 460 HP laptop models have been found having a keylogger; though deactivated but still posing a potential security threat. Anyone with access to the system could use the logger to record user info without having to install anything.

This was first reported by Michael Myng, a security researcher who identified the potential security risk. He said:

Some time ago someone asked me if I can figure out how to control HP’s laptop keyboard backlight. I asked for the keyboard driver SynTP.sys, opened it in IDA, and after some browsing noticed a few interesting strings. The strings led me to something that I wasn’t expecting; a hidden keylogger in a Synaptics device driver.

However, when highlighted, HP responded quickly and said:

HP uses Synaptics’ touchpads in some of its mobile PCs and has worked with Synaptics to provide fixes to their error for impacted HP systems, available via the security bulletin on HP.com.

HP has issued a list of affected devices on its official website as well. You should check it out to see if your laptop model is one of the affected ones. The EliteBook, Pavilion, ProBook and Envy ranges are among the laptops that could be at risk.

What’s Keylogger?

A keylogger is a surveillance software that has the capability to record every keystroke made on the system. The recording is saved in a log file. Everything is recorded whatever you do on the system including instant messages, email, usernames, passwords, visited websites and other personally identifiable information that can later be sent to a specified receiver and may lead to cyber theft.

How to Remove Keylogger from HP Laptop?

As mentioned earlier, HP has taken notice of the issue and has already released an updated version of the drivers to tackle the vulnerability. If your laptop is listed among the affected ones, just download and install the new driver. It is also advised to keep your operating system updated with the latest releases and security patches.
