Beware of a malicious ‘WhatsApp Plus’ app being circulated on the web these days that can harm your smartphone.
WhatsApp, the most widely used instant messaging and video calling app, has nothing to do with ‘WhatsApp Plus’ that carries shiny gold logo describing itself as an upgrade to the regular WhatsApp.
Be noted that if one gets involved in that malicious app, it recommends to delete the original WhatsApp taking full control of the smartphone.
Malicious WhatsApp Plus App
According to reports shared by major tech blogs, the malicious WhatsApp Plus app does not offer any additional functionality or features but, instead it actually inserts malware on the smartphone and steals one’s personal information.
The identified malicious app is said to be a new variant of a fake WhatsApp riskware Android/PUP.Riskware.Wtaspin.GB that was first revealed in 2017. The app carries a number of unheard features including hiding and reading the text in background. The app also lets you hide the notification if you have played a voice clip.
How to Identify the Fake App?
As mentioned earlier, the WhatsApp Plus has a shiny gold logo in the middle along with a written URL instead of the original green-coloured logo of WhatsApp we are quite familiar with.
Once the victim clicks the ‘Agree and Continue’ button, the app prompts to download the latest version of the app through Google Play store.
If the victim goes through the download process, the malicious version of so-called WhatsApp diverts to an unsafe website where the text is written in Arabic.
How to Uninstall WhatsApp Plus
God forbid, if you have already been trapped by the malicious app, it is better to uninstall and download the legitimate version of WhatsApp from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Go through the following steps to get rid of WhatsApp Plus:
- Go to the phone’s Settings
- Scroll down a bit and tap ‘Apps & Notifications’
- Tap the WhatsApp Plus or any other app you want to delete
- Tap Uninstall
- Tap Ok to confirm
