One would be right to say that today’s smartphones have replaced a number of items that would have filled a whole room a few decades ago. We have everything in our palm under small shiny display from radio to any entertainment device one may think of, like music player, video player, gaming console and a lot more. With the launch of Sony Xperia XZ Premium, we can add “a mirror” to the above list.

The newest flagship from Sony happens to be the shiniest phone we’ve ever seen and don’t forget with the advent of Xperia XZ Premium, Sony has made a successful re-entry to Pakistan. The brand was earlier known for its unique build quality and excellent camera performance. Does the newest flagship carry the trend forwards? Let’s find out!

The new trend of bezelless displays has become landmark for every flagship device of today; rather some mid-rangers have also adopted the concept. However, that hasn’t discouraged Sony at all and they are sticking with their Xperia design language. The entire new line-up comes with the Sony specific squarish body form but more refined this time.

Sony has introduced the same Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the front and the back of the device making it safe from day-to-day scratches. Although the sides are made by plastic but can hardly be distinguished.

As we said in the opening lines, a truly reflecting mirror lies on the back that attracts a lot of fingerprints though. On the front, there are the dual front facing speakers, secondary camera and other various sensors nicely pinched over there. Whereas, the back houses the primary camera and the single LED flash and laser autofocus.

Coming to the right side of the device, you’ll find the volume rocker, power button/fingerprint scanner and the dedicated camera shutter button over there. While, on the left you’ll find a flap that houses the microSD card and SIM card slot.

Who else can beat the XZ Premium in its display features? Certainly no one as we have a very impressive 5.5-inch panel having a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. Yes, that’s 4k! The previous line-up of the Xperia was the first one ever to feature a 4k panel and the XZ Premium just makes it even better.

While the Z5 Premium rendered the UI and other non-4k content in regular 1080p to save battery, the XZ Premium is always rendering everything in 4k. Thanks to the Bravia TV technology that the XZ Premium uses for better colour reproduction and good contrasty images.

Being a flagship smartphone, the Xperia XZ Premium uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM. The chipset is there to ensure the top notch performance all the time around.

You’ll experience a comparatively faster loading of apps as compared to any other ‘flagship’ in the market. Even the most resource intensive games out there such as Real Racing 3 runs without breaking a sweat. There are no dropped frames or choppiness in the gameplay.

Thanks to the 4GB of RAM, you can load multiple applications in the background without having to worry about them closing and you can quickly move between them.

Let’s talk about the most impressive feature of the gadget – the camera. The XZ Premium features a 19MP f/2.0 sensor with predictive phase detection and laser autofocus. The sensor is larger than usual, making it possible to capture quality images in low-light environment.

As mentioned earlier, the XZ Premium also features a physical shutter button. You won’t get the ease of using a physical shutter button unless you have actually used one. Once you are used to it, you will find yourself looking for it on any other phone.

If we talk about the quality, the images are quite sharp and detailed, especially in good lighting. The colours are nice and accurate. However, in bright conditions, some parts do look overexposed but that can be adjusted using the manual mode.

Another top feature of the camera setup is the 960fps slow mo capturing one. It works really well, but only in well-lit conditions. Anything other than sunlight and it is completely unusable. Resulting videos look phenomenal and it takes a bit of practicing to get used to. You can take a look at some of the samples in the video above.

There’s also Augmented Reality on board. Other manufacturers have also tried to implement it but only in vain. Interacting with the unique feature is smooth supported with a number of AR scenarios but you can download more if you please.

Sony brings a 3,230 mAh unit with the XZ Premium. Here comes a little bump as this amount of power is somewhat under par considering the high-res display. Users must be satisfied with an average battery life.

The Verdict

We believe that the Xperia XZ Premium will give you a unique experience that no other phone in the market can offer. Although it does have huge bezels all around but those may be compromised with other prime features that the XZ Premium offers such as dual front facing speakers, a 4K display, excellent camera and top of the line performance.

If you have made up your mind for the Premium by Sony at a price tag of PKR 77,999; keep it in your mind that you are not going to follow the market trend but a quite unique experience that most other phones won’t be able to offer.
