Xiaomi has just unveiled a duo of compact and simplistic devices having taller displays, named as Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A. According to previous rumors, Redmi 6 was expected to have a notched display but it seems that only the “plus” version or the alleged Redmi 6 Plus will get a cutout on the display with a higher screen-to-body ratio.
Redmi 6 – Features
The Redmi 6 looks like a well-rounded budget midrange device that consists of a simplistic design, fair bezel size and the trendy dual camera setup. The device has been made available in several vibrant color options like Platinum Silver Gray, Rose Gold, Bali Blue and Quicksand Gold with a metal finish.
The smartphone features a 5.45-inch IPS LCD panel on the front having an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. While looking on the rear, we find a generic cosmetic line, a horizontal dual camera array and the fingerprint sensor.
Xiaomi brings an octa-core 12nm Helio P22 chipset under the hood, clocked at 2.0 GHz to power up the device. The new SoC was recently launched by Mediatek and is considered to be an equivalent to the Snapdragon 625 in terms of performance but promises more battery life. The smartphone comes with two memory combos to choose from 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB.
On the photography department, the Redmi 6 houses a dual camera set up on the rear consisting of 12MP main and 5MP secondary sensor. Following the present trend of smartphone market these days, the primary shooter is paired with the secondary depth sensor in order to deliver realistic background blur. Surely, AI beautification features and other gimmicks are also available. The front camera can manage up to 5MP photos, though.
The Redmi 6 runs on Android Oreo out of the box with Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 10 skin on top. The device gets fuelled by a non-removable 3,000 mAh battery unit that sports 10W charging.
Redmi 6A – Features
The Redmi 6A, on the other hand, is an entry level device that brings the same neat design as we’ve found on the Redmi 6 – the metal finish with slightly curved edges. However, the horizontally aligned camera array consists of a single lens setup instead. Interestingly, it carries the same display panel as the Redmi 6 sporting an HD+ (720 x 1440) resolution, measuring 5.45-inches at an 18:9 aspect ratio.
Being an entry level product, the Redmi 6A gets a less powerful Helio A22 chipset but has the same octa-core configuration with 2.0 GHz clock speed. The new A22 chipset is Mediatek’s first A series SoC that offers special power saving features for entry-level devices. The Redmi 6A has the only memory combo of 2GB RAM paired with 16GB of internal storage.
On the camera front, the Redmi 6A features a single lens on the rear that shoots decent 13MP photos. It also has a 5MP selfie shooter, capable of facial recognition and background blur.
The Redmi 6A also runs on the same OS as its elder sibling does that is Android Oreo along with Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 10 that promises advanced photography features for even single lens entry-level phones. The device gets fuelled by a 3,000 mAh battery that promises a 19 days of standby time.
Pricing and Availability
The Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A will initially be launched for the Chinese market on June 15th. The 32GB and 64GB Xiaomi Redmi 6 are respectively priced at CNY 799 (~$125, PKR 14,800) and CNY 999 (~$156, PKR 18,500). Whereas, the modest Redmi 6A carries a price tag of CNY 599 (~$94, PKR 11,100).
Although, there is no official confirmation but both these devices are likely to be launched in emerging markets of Asia including Pakistan and India in coming weeks. Stay tuned to be informed.
