Samsung Galaxy X has been a mystery device as we only knew it as a foldable smartphone but the latest reports from South Korea have revealed that the mystery is going to an end and Samsung is gearing up to unveil Galaxy X foldable smartphone in early 2018. However, the smartphone is expected to be a limited edition that may not be released globally but in select markets only.

Although some other manufacturers like Apple, LG and Huawei are also working on the same lines but it seems that Samsung would be the first one to debut a foldable smartphone in the market. DJ Koh, Samsung’s mobile chief, had already confirmed in September that the company would bring its first foldable smartphone in 2018.

Foldable Smartphone – An Innovative Concept

The idea behind the concept is to create a 2-in-1 device that serves to function as both a smartphone and a tablet with the help of some kind of screen-folding mechanism. However, the real challenge lies in developing a screen that can fold in such a way. That is why Samsung has spent lots of time and money on flexible OLED screens and has spear-headed a number of innovative display designs – including the new Infinity Display on the Galaxy S8.

Meanwhile, industry insiders have revealed that Samsung Display has successfully managed to build a foldable screen with a curvature of 1.0R. It means that users will be able to fold the screen inward like a paper. It may not be a glass panel as it is speculated to be made of up plastic materials.

Samsung Galaxy X Foldable Smartphone

Rumors have revealed that the Galaxy X may come with a fold-in design. Samsung has filed numerous patents for foldable phones in the recent past, we will have to wait and see what sort of design and features will be arriving on the Galaxy X.

Tech analysists say that Samsung really urges to unveil foldable display in 2018 to disrupt Apple-LG deal for launching its first foldable phone. Recent rumors have suggested that LG Display will be supplying its foldable display panels for the foldable iPhone that may debut in 2020.

On the other hand, LG Display is expected to be ready with a foldable screen with a curvature of 1.0R as early as 2019. However, in the next year it is expected to launch its foldable screen with a curvature of 2.5R. According to display industry, a foldable smartphone will be commercialized in the next few years.

Let us wait and see when the Galaxy X comes out of the shrouds to become reality. We find the upcoming CES 2018 to be the right place for Samsung Galaxy X to do so.
