WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging and video calling app, has rolled out a new feature enabling users to share their real-time location with friends or family. WhatsApp has borrowed this popular feature from its parent company Facebook where the feature is being widely used by users.
The new feature becomes very handy if used for coordinating meet-ups and parties or for the safety and security aspects as well. You may share your location with your parents when you are on your way to college, university or market.
WhatsApp has named the feature as ‘Live Location’ and madse it available to both major mobile OS – Android and iOS. It is worth mentioning that Facebook experimented the same feature on Messenger back in May this year.
Zafir Khan, Product Manager at WhatsApp says, “Live location is a way to share your location in a chat and the participants in that chat will then be able to see your real-time location as it updates on a map. It’s short-term in nature, it’s limited in duration.”
How to Use Live Location Feature
In order to use the Live Location feature, first of all choose friend(s) you want to share your location with and then select the duration of your location visibility; whether it’s a few minutes or many hours.
In return, WhatsApp sends a map to your selected contact(s) displaying your current location in real-time. Be noted that your location is not shared publically but limited to individual chats. It means that you may share your live location in a one-on-one WhatsApp conversation or a group chat. If multiple people in a chat share their live location altogether, they all appear on the same map.
