Sony has unveiled their new flagship duo Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact at the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) Exhibition. The company has introduced better specs sheet along with better build quality and camera capabilities than the previous versions of XZ series. The newly introduced twin have similar specs with minor differences in display size and memory aspects.

Features

The Xperia XZ1 is a full metal built smartphone with the display on the front having Corning Gorilla Glass 5 making it a real durable device. On the other hand, the Xperia XZ Compact also comes with the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front but the metallic back is replaced by a special glass fiber material. Sony refers to it as the “Loop Surface” design since both the phones look squarish but have a much more rounded feel in hand.

As we mentioned in the intro, the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact differ in display sizes; the XZ1 has a 5.2-inch, 1080p HDR display whereas the smaller variant features a 4.6-inch 720p display. While it is only a 1080p panel, it is still one of the best 1080p panels you can get. It still has TRLUMINOS, X-Reality technologies from Sony – which can be defined as a Quantum Dot display and Sony’s software optimisation.

As far as the OS is concerned, Sony has equipped the twin with the recently launched Android 8.0 Oreo superimposed with Sony’s own Xperia Launcher and Apps making it more user friendly.

In terms of hardware used, both the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact are exactly same; we have the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset along with 4GB of RAM. Here comes the second difference in both the variants – the internal storage; the XZ1 sporting 64GB of UFS internal storage while the Compact model has 32GB instead. However, both the smartphones come with dedicated micro SD card slots.

The twin also share the same battery size – 2,700mAh. While the battery may seem low on paper, Sony reckons that it will last a full day thanks to its excellent battery saving techniques. Sony has also used it Qnovo technology which makes sure that the batteries do not degrade due to regular use.

Camera

The camera features are the strongest part of the specs sheet. You get the sharp 19MP 1/2.3″ Exmor RS sensor on the back. This sensor made the news when Sony announced it with the XZ Premium. It features hardware RAM which allows it to capture frames even before the hardware shutter key is pressed. Sony has also included some advanced features making it more fun-lasting like the ultra-slow motion 960fps HD video capture.

The Predictive Capture focuses and captures images before and after the user presses the shutter thus allowing user to choose from the best available image. Whereas, the Predictive Hybrid Focus is among the fastest in the market with a focus speed of only 0.2 seconds. It makes use of laser AF, phase detection AF and contrast AF to speed up focus time. It also has the new autofocus burst feature that refocuses between burst shots.

One new feature offered on the XZ1 is a 3D scanning mode. The camera can scan an object and save the file as a 3D image, which it can then send to a 3D printer or share to a social network. Sony plans to integrate the feature with games, so it will be possible to scan your head and use it as an avatar, but those partnerships are not yet finalized.

The selfie camera is a 13MP, 1/3.06″, Exmor RS sensor with a 22mm wide angle with f/2.0 aperture on the XZ1. However, the XZ1 Compact comes with an 8MP sensor that can switch to ultra wide selfie mode with an FOV of 120 degrees.

Price and Availability

The Xperia XZ1 will be made available through Amazon or Best Buy from September 19th with a price tag of $700 (~PKR 73,570). However you’ll have to wait a bit more for the smaller variant as the XZ1 Compact will be offered through the same platforms from October 4th with a price of $100 lower than the elder sibling.
