Vivo brings ‘true bezellessness’ with its new venture Vivo NEX series achieving more than 91% of screen-to-body ratio, no notch and a retractable front camera. The Chinese manufacturer has introduced two variants named as NEX S and NEX A; the former being the flagship device while that latter falls in midrange category.

Vivo NEX S – Features

The Vivo NEX S is the device that brings the unique retractable selfie shooter on the front that pops up as and when an app wants to have an access to the front camera. The innovative and distinctive design has helped Vivo to decrease components from the front of the phone and shrink the display bezels.

Vivo has also managed to embed the fingerprint sensor within the display. Moreover, another unique idea of Screen SoundCasting has vanished the earpiece as the body of the phone acts like a speaker cone.

Vivo has introduced a Super AMOLED display panel on the front called Ultra FullView Display that measures 6.59-inch diagonally. It has an FHD+ resolution of 1080 x 2316 pixels at 19.3:9 aspect ratio. And there is the highest ever attained screen-to-body ratio on the Vivo NEX S that sets new record of 91.24%.

Under the hood, Vivo NEX S features an octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset that brings a 4 x 2.7 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4 x 1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver core configuration to power up the device. The graphics department is governed by an Adreno 630 while a huge 8GB RAM is there for quick accessing the apps. However, users have an option to choose either 128GB or 256GB variant as per their data needs with no support for the microSD card, though.

The rear pf the phone is equipped with a vertically arranged dual camera setup comprising of a primary 12MP f/1.8 sensor and a 5MP f/2.4 unit. The main shooter also features a 4-axis OIS, Dual Pixel PDAF, AI-powered scene recognition and a dual-tone flash. Whereas, the retractable front camera sports an 8MP resolution and f/2.0 aperture.

The Vivo NEX S runs on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box with company’s own latest Funtouch OS 4 on top that comes with full-screen touch gestures fully utilizing the massive display panel. The smartphone has its own smart assistant known as Jovi assistant that can be triggered via a dedicated button on its side and works on artificial intelligence technology. It supports several functionalities such as smart map reading, encyclopaedia, shopping, translation, scanning and screen recognition among others.

The NEX S is fuelled by a massive non-removable 4,000 mAh battery unit that can be charged by a Type-C connector. There’s also 22.5 W fast charging. Color option are Black and Red.

Vivo NEX A – Features

The Vivo NEX A is a midrange member of the NEX series that looks quite similar to the NEX S in design features except for a rear mounted fingerprint sensor instead of in-display reader and an RGB lighting feature on the rear. While the front panel is exactly the same as of its elder sibling, users may experience the same bezellessness.

Vivo has embedded a Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 710 chipset under the hood to power up the device that comes with integrated AI features and machine learning algorithms. However, the smartphone features a lesser 6GB of RAM that seems reasonable as far as the processor is concerned. Likewise, we have only one option for the internal storage that limits up to 128GB with no means of expansion as the device comes with no microSD card slot.

The camera features are similar to the NEX S with a periscope-like selfie camera that pops up sporting an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. Similarly, the rear dual camera set up features a 12 MP Sony lens, aperture f/1.8, and a secondary 5 MP f/2.4 depth sensor.

Other specifications like the OS with Jovi assistant and battery unit are exactly the same as we have discussed for the Vivo NEX S.
Connectivity options include Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz / 5GHz) 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5 LE, GPS + GLONASS and USB Type-C.

Vivo NEX – Pricing & Availability

Although Vivo has not yet officially announced the international exposure of the duo of Vivo NEX series but both the NEX S has already been made available in China while the NEX A is due to hit the Chinese market on June 23rd.

The Vivo NEX S is offered with a premium pricing of CNY 4,498 (~$701, PKR 84,800) for 128GB variant while the 256GB costs CNY 4,998 (~$779, PKR 94,200). However, the pre-orders for Vivo NEX A are underway for a slightly lower price tag of CNY 3898 (~$608, PKR 73,500).
