Vivo, a Chinese brand, amazed everyone at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas by showcasing the first ever commercial phone equipped with in-display fingerprint scanner. Alex Feng, Senior Vice President at Vivo had revealed that the phone will be officially announced in early 2018. He further added that phone packs an in-display fingerprint technology by Synaptics which only works with OLED displays, and thus, the handset will feature an AMOLED display.

It was highlighted that the fingerprint scanner will be placed between the glass panel and the OLED display panel. When the finger touches the glass panel, the OLED panel illuminates the fingerprint area and the chip inside processes the beams of light emitted.

While company did not mention the name of device at that moment but the Vivo X20 Plus UD is believed to be the one to set new standards for major names like Apple and Samsung. The device was first heard of a few weeks ago when the X20 Plus UD got its 3C certification. It was assumed that the ‘UD’ in the name stands for ‘Under Display’ – a hint at the fingerprint scanner residing under the screen.

Vivo X20 Plus UD – Specifications

Most recent reports suggest that the Vivo X20 Plus UD has appeared on TENNA revealing main design features and specs sheet. According to details, the smartphone will bring a 6.43-inch 20160 x 1080 OLED display, the same as the original X20 Plus. The X20 Plus UD will be powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core processor, most probably the Snapdragon 660. Whereas, the device to incorporate 4GB of RAM along with 128GB of native expandable storage.

On the camera front, the device to bring a 12MP + 5MP dual camera combo on the rear and another 12MP sensor on the front for video calling and capturing selfies. However, the phone will be offered with a slightly smaller 3,800mAh battery.

Vivo X20 Plus UD – Pricing and Availability

It is said that Vivo has already started mass production of the X20 Plus UD with plans to launch the device later this month with price tag of ¥3,698 (~$574 or PKR 63,000). However, it is also rumoured that Vivo may unveil the device at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Assuming any of the report as true, it is clear that we are not too far from the first device equipped with in-display fingerprint scanner.
