Vivo, a Chinese brand, makes history by unveiling the world’s first phone with Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor – Vivo X20 Plus UD. The new phone has a Synaptics-build Clear ID 9500 sensor towards the bottom of the AMOLED display that means you get a bezelless display without forfeiting a fingerprint sensor on the front – the most highlighted feature indeed. The smartphone may be categorised as a mid-range device having premium price tag.
Vivo X20 Plus UD – Features
If we look into the specs sheet of Vivo X20 Plus UD, the smartphone is equipped with a 6.43-inch Super-AMOLED display having 18:9 aspect ratio that carries a Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The new Vivo venture brings a single colour option of Black with Gold aesthetics.
The Vivo X20 Plus UD runs on FunTouch OS 3.2 flavoured Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS. We have the Snapdragon 660 chipset powering up the new device, accompanied by 4 GB of RAM. However, Vivo has doubled the native storage to 128GB for the UD variant as compared to 64GB for the regular model of X20 Plus. It also features a microSD card slot for more storage.
On the camera front, the Vivo X20 Plus UD carries a dual camera setup on its rear including an f/1.8 aperture 12MP primary sensor and a secondary one of 5MP. For snapping selfies, the handset is equipped with f/2.0 aperture 12MP front-facing camera. There comes the Vivo Image Cube consisting of a 256MB image sensor processor to exclusively handle photography related tasks.
The UD version of X20 Plus has a slightly smaller battery of 3,800 mAh capacity as compared to the 3,905 mAh unit of regular X20 Plus. However, the battery carries support for fast charging technology. The connectivity features available on the smartphone include dual-SIM support, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, microUSB and 3.5mm audio jack.
Like the X20 Plus, it also features Face Wake facial recognition feature, Vivo Game Engine that improves the game-play experience and it also carries support for dual apps. The phone is also equipped with ES9318 DAC + combo amp Hi-Fi audio and AI.
Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor
The feature that distinguishes the new model from all those high-tech devices offered by major brands is undoubtedly the under-display fingerprint sensor. The Synaptics-build sensor lies between the front glass and display panel.
That means users can unlock the smartphone by tapping on the on-screen fingerprint icon without lifting the device in hands. Apart from unlocking the phone, it can be also used for making secure payments through AliPay and WeChat.
According to Vivo, by using photoelectric reflection technology, the RGB Pixel that is specially adapted to the OLED panel emits light which penetrates the outer glass that has a thickness of 0.68mm to reach the finger. The company claims that the under-display fingerprint sensor can unlock the phone in around 0.6 to 0.7 seconds.
