The Facebook owned WhatsApp messenger is steadily transforming itself from the most widely used voice/video calling platform to a business friendly app. We have seen WhatsApp Business app introduced in selected markets recently and now the company is expanding its horizons by introducing WhatsApp Payment – a digital person-to-person payment solution, initially in India.
According to details shared by Tech Crunch, WhatsApp Payment is the long-awaited service that is currently being rolled out in beta version for selected users in India – one of the most vibrant markets for WhatsApp with around 200 million daily users.
However, it is surprising to know that it took almost a year for WhatsApp to bring digital payment service announced for India back in April last year; and that too in beta version.
How to Use WhatsApp Payment Feature
The WhatsApp beta testers have confirmed that the function is live on both the iOS and Android version with a list of various banks in the WhatsApp user interface.
However, users have to verify their phone number via SMS to be able to use the government-backed Unified Payments Interface within the app.
They can then choose among the pretty large list of banks available, including the State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank, which are some of the biggest in the country.
Even though the WhatsApp Payment has been rolled out in India, it is still not clear whether the feature will be rolled out for other markets in beta version or the stable one. We anticipate Pakistan being another big market in the region for WhatsApp with millions of daily active users would become the next stop.
