None of the Xiaomi smartphones are equipped with the trendy wireless charging so far. But the recent move of the company points an early introduction of the latest technology by the Chinese brand. According to reports Xiaomi has joined the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) that will make it possible for the next flagship smartphone from the company to support wireless charging features.

Not to mention that the WPC was formed in 2008 and it has around 243 members including Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony and many more. Apple joined the Consortium in February this year paving the way for iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X to arrive with wireless charging.

Although Xiaomi has not released any official handout to confirm the report, however it has been found listed in the WPC member list on the official webpage of the Consortium.

The WPC listing suggests that the next flagship from Xiaomi will support wireless charging. Meanwhile, the fresh information claims that Xiaomi Mi 7 will feature wireless charging and its trial production will start prior China’s Sprint Festival next year.

Xiaomi Mi 7 with Wireless Charging Features

According to Chinese media reports, since Xiaomi is rumored to be using the same foundry as Apple used for its wireless charging development, it is likely to see the Mi 7 with the same Broadcom chip and NXP transmitter that enables wireless charging feature on the 2017 iPhones. Likewise, the arrival of wireless charging on Mi 7 could mean that it will feature a glass chassis like the latest iPhone models.

Recent reports have revealed that the Mi 7 would be housing a 6-inch AMOLED display made by Samsung and it will be fueled by Snapdragon 845 chipset. The SoC is expected to be accompanied by 6GB or 8GB of RAM. We may see the 3D facial recognition feature on Mi 7.

It is also rumoured that the Mi 7 may come with a pair of f/1.7 aperture 16-megapixel rear-facing camera sensors. The device may house the same battery source as that of Mi 6 – 3,350mAh. The inclusion of Qi charging on Mi 7 indicates that users will be able to refill its battery wirelessly by placing the phone on a wireless charging bed.

What is Wireless Charging?

The Qi system of charging allows users to place their wireless charging enabled device on a charging pad that is connected to a power outlet. A magnetic field is created when the coils present inside the device and pad come into contact with each other.

The magnetic field in turn produces electricity that charges the device. Qi standard wireless charging is now available at restaurants and airports that allow users to charge their smartphones by simply placing them on the charging pad.

Pricing and Availability

There are unconfirmed reports that Xiaomi is gearing up to bring Mi 7 in March next year. If the reports are considered true, we expect to see mass production of the flagship device before February 2018. Whereas, the device may hit the market in April with an expected price tag of CNY 2,699 (~PKR 43,000 or $410).
