Xiaomi India has been teasing its fans with campaign “Desh Ka Smartphone” (smartphone of the country). It seems that the Chinese brand has kept its words and unveiled the Redmi 5A – the most affordable smartphone by Xiaomi until now which is far better alternative to Nokia 2 in price tag.

The Redmi 5A is the successor to Redmi 4A that was launched in Pakistan last year. The newer variant shares a lot with its predecessor; same internal hardware, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. However, Xiaomi has introduced a dedicated microSD card slot in addition to two SIM card slots enabling users to expand the memory up to 256GB.

The Redmi 5A features a 5.0-inch 720p screen. The phone is powered by the quad-core Snapdragon 425 chipset. Redmi 5A runs MIUI 9 out of the box, the latest software interface of Xiaomi.

The phone features a 13MP f/2.2 camera on the rear. It has a 5MP f/2.0 front camera. The 3000mAh battery is designed to provide two days’ worth of usage, once fully charged.

Xiaomi VP and managing director for India Manu Kumar Jain stated,

We strongly believe that the best of technology should be made accessible to as many people as possible, because technology can improve lives. With Redmi 5A we take another step in offering a great all-round experience for users looking for their first smartphone. We believe Redmi 5A is the smartphone for everyone.

Pricing and Availability

The Redmi 5A has been made available in India with a surprisingly lower price tag of INR 4,999 (~$77) for the first 5 million units. Later on, the price of the phone will be equal to base variant Redmi 4A.

Xiaomi is expected to launch this ground-breaking and budget-friendly smartphone in Pakistan very soon. It is expected to be offered in Pakistan for PKR 10,000; lower than the Redmi 4A that carried a price tag of PKR 12,249 when it was launched last year.
