Xiaomi, the fourth largest smartphone supplier in the world, is 8 years old and the Chinese tech giant has decided to celebrate the anniversary year by launching a smartphone – most probably Mi 8.

Although, there’s no official confirmation on this, however, images circulating on Weibo are related to a possible “Xiaomi Mi 8 Anniversary edition phone”.

Official-looking images suggest that a special phone, with “8” somewhere in its name, will get launched to mark Xiaomi’s 8th-year in the smartphone industry. Another short video also highlights the upcoming 8th anniversary smartphone arriving with a 3D Face ID making it a perfect iPhone X clone and an in-display fingerprint scanner to be an iPhone X clone+.

It is worth noting that Xiaomi is one of those prominent manufacturers who have said ‘no’ to top notch feature first introduced by iPhone X. Though, Chinese brand has paid a lot to attain bezellessness like others by introducing camera sensors right at the bottom of Mi Mix 2 and Mi Mix 2s.

A Chinese source claims that Xaiomi is planning to launch its next flagship at a dedicated launch event in Shenzen, China on May 31st. Considering the new leak, the Mi 8 is supposed to be the sequel to last year’s Mi 6. Though, not officially announced as yet but it is likely that Xiaomi may skip the smartphone moniker Mi 7.

As far as the rumor mill goes on, the Mi 8 is expected to feature the Snapdragon 845 chipset along with a memory combo of up to 8GB RAM and 64GB of native storage. The anniversary model is expected to be fuelled by a 4,000mAh battery unit with support for wireless charging.

The video shared below is quite short, so we really can’t see what’s going on within the interface, except for the in-display fingerprint login. Also seen in the video is what appears to be version 9 of the MIUI, the family of custom skins by Xiaomi made for their Android phones.

Even so, Xiaomi keeps its Mi series in proper numerical sorting and name the upcoming venture as Mi 7, while naming the 8th Anniversary phone something else. At the end of the day, we can only wait and see what Xiaomi has in store for the fans.
